The
Vision: The
development of simple, non-invasive, fast screening technologies
for infectious diseases, which are low-cost, generic and safe
The
Opportunity:
To
combat the spread of pulmonary Tuberculosis (TB) and other diseases
The
Solution:
An integrated, portable, system solution involving, optics, biochemistry,
electronics, medicine, spectroscopy and fluorimetry. Innovative
industrial design is used with the operator and patientin mind

The
development of rapid, simple-to use, screening methods administered
at the point-of-care for checking infectious diseases, is of paramount
importance. The re-emergence of 'old' diseases and modern transportation
leads to the rapid spread of diseases across the continents.
The system
being developed by RBS Ltd is based on the principle of a 'breathalyser'.
The device comprises a unique combination of cough sample collection,
followed by detection of a pathogen using fluorimetry of an immunoassay
system. RBS has carried out initial proof of principle work that
demonstrates the feasibility and appropriate sensitivity of such
a device. The system is the subject of Patent application PCT/GB02/01740
- publication date 11 October 2002. A related set of inventions
is subject to additional filings as of Autumn 2002.
